Youth respond to bishop's call

Posted by Bwcarchives on

WALDORF ? At Rock 2006, Bishop John Schol challenged the youth to travel to the Gulf Coast and make a difference in the lives of people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Twenty-three youth and 10 adults from Lakeside UMC took him up on that challenge and made the 1,000 mile trip to Gulfport, Miss., in June.

Not only did the youth work on five houses while there, they raised the money for the travel expenses and had enough ($1,150) to donate to the two churches where they stayed.

For Lakeside UMC, it was a continuation of a ministry that started with the hurricane. The Millers, a church family, had 13 relatives who came to stay with them after the hurricane just over a year ago. Within 36 hours, the church had gathered three truckloads of supplies, food, medical and clothing, and driven them to Gulfport.
