Youth help in West Rivers maintenance

SEVERNA PARK In preparation for their confirmation on Pentecost, May 19, 37 youth from Severna Park UMC did a service project at West River United Methodist Center. They learned a lot about connectionalism by being at their camp and about service as they accomplished an amazing amount of work, said the Rev. Lee Farrell, minister of education and youth.

The youth were divided into several work teams led by parents and directed by Dave English, West Rivers director of maintenance.

By the end of the chilly day they had spread four cubic yards of mulch around the climbing wall, painted the oil tank and walls on the back of the dining hall and spread 12 tons of gravel on an existing path. They worked hard and accomplished much more than expected, English said.

I like knowing I made a difference, said 7th grader Lauren Harman.

Howard County gathers for Day of Prayer

ELLICOTT CITY The Rockland UMC praise band Forgiven led worship and singing to kick off the Howard County observance of the National Day of Prayer. Because of weather, the observance scheduled for outside at Centennial Park on May 2, was moved inside to a nearby church. The ecumenical service was the second that day sponsored by Howard County PRAY, which gathered congregations and citizens together in a concert of prayer for the nation, said the Rev. Mark Teasdale.

Teasdale, from Rockland UMC, and the Rev. Victor Sawyer, from Locust UMC, each led 10-minute prayer huddles. The huddles formed from the participating congregations, bringing in others sitting nearby. The service focused on national repentance and revival.

Holy Week experience made memorable

SILVER SPRING Members of Memorial UMC wont forget their Holy Week services for a long time, said Betty L. Leach, the Sunday School superintendent. Of special significance was the Maundy Thursday service when the Rev. E. Dwight Byrne portrayed Jesus at the Last Supper and washed the disciples feet, Leach said. The service included feet and hand washing for each member of the congregation.

Cluster choir raises funds for Zimbabwe

LOCH RAVEN Nearly 80 choristers filled the chancel area of Loch Raven UMC April 21 for the Baltimore North Clusters Four Choir Festival. The music filled the sanctuary with praise and honor to our Lord, said Lynn Jones, the churchs secretary. Choirs from Arnolia, Hiss, Idlewylde and Linden Heights United Methodist churches joined in the mass choir, directed by Judith Zahren, Loch Ravens music director.

The concert raised $1,093 for the Baltimore North District missions project in Nenhowe, Zimbabwe, said the Rev. Henry Thompson III.

Church observes 180th anniversary

DAMASCUS Members of Damascus UMC on the Damascus-Friendship Charge, are not waiting 25 years to celebrate their 200th anniversary. Instead they observe their founding every five years.

April 13, 1822, marked the day when Benjamin Benton deeded an acre of land on Mullinex Mill Road to the Mount Lebanon Methodist Episcopal Church.

The churchs 180-year history, compiled by Gary Richard, was exhibited. Also on display was a quilt, made by the churchs women in 1915 and auctioned off to Oliver Brandenburg, who passed it down through three generations to his granddaughter, Kay Brandenburg Black. She loaned it to the church for this historical occasion.
