Young student has chance for normal life

Posted by Bwcarchives on

MIDDLETOWN ? Eleven-year-old Claire Menke, whose parents are members of Middletown UMC, is in need of assistance to help her lead a normal life at Middletown Middle School. She has a form of muscular dystrophy, and uses a motorized wheelchair in order to get around easier.

Her church, family and community have banned together to help the young student acquire a Mobility Assistance Dog from 4 Paws For Ability, an Ohio-based company. The agency trains the service dogs to be able to open doors, bring the phone, carry objects, help her get up if she falls and many other services. The dog will also provide emotional and spiritual support, according to the Middletown Valley Citizen newspaper.

By August, the church and community had raised half the $14,000 needed, only part of the cost it takes to train and care for the special dogs before placing them in their final home.

Middletown UMC held a fundraiser Aug. 14-Sept. 15, accepting $5 donations which will be part of a drawing for gifts from local merchants.
