We can make a difference, we can make a change,' sang John Johnson, Director of Music of the contemporary service at Catonsville UMC, to more than 200 young adults and clergy at the young adult worship party May 28 from 9 p.m. to midnight.

The event was hosted by the Young Adult Council of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, outside the church grounds of Old Otterbein UMC during the 221st session of the annual conference.

'This is a diverse crowd. We have all types of people here tonight,' said Christian comedian, Rick Younger, who made the crowd laugh when he talked about life including differences in worship style between black and white churches.

Young and old danced, while others socialized and drank non- alcoholic strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas mixed by the chair of the Young Adult Council, the Rev. Kimberly Hall, associate pastor of Mount Zion UMC, and the Rev. Byron E. Brought, pastor of Oakdale Emory in Olney.

The crowd also watched Christian drama, listened to poetry and music and heard a sermon on the party's theme 'Living Waters: Go Deep.'

'We want to model to local churches by having events like this and participating in them. We want to reach out to young adults on the street, we want to bring the church to them,' said the Rev. Mike Sharp.

On July 1, the Rev. Kevin Smalls will become the conference's new director of the young adult ministries.
