Young Adult Summit

Posted by Bwcarchives on

Bishop John R. Schol and the young adults of the Baltimore-Washington Conference are breaking new ground in reaching out to an often overlooked segment of the church with a summit Nov. 3.

'Reaching out to young adults, ages 18 to 30, has never been more important,' said Bishop Schol. 'Since May, a task force of clergy and laity has been working to organize a Young Adult Summit at the Conference Center in Columbia. This will be a great opportunity for church leaders to identify how to:

? Make disciples of young adults,
? Increase participation of young adults in the church and ministry, and
? Mobilize young adults to carry out ministry within the conference.'

On Saturday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. the group will gather in worship with the Rev. Ezra Maize and the First AME Zion choir from Knoxville, Tenn., to kick off what many believe will be a watershed moment in the life of young adults in this conference.

The Rev. Jim Walker from the Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community, who led a Bible study at annual conference in May, will also be joining the summit. Walker has experienced incredible success reaching out to Pittsburgh?s young adults in authentic and genuine ways. His ministry includes Bible study in tattoo parlors, coffee shops, restaurants and other places where many people wouldn?t expect to talk about God. Conference leaders are looking forward to tapping into his energy and expertise.

Participants will also hear from a number of young adults from throughout the Conference who are new to the faith and The United Methodist Church. They will share about their experiences, what?s drawn them into their churches, and how congregations can better reach out to the 18 to 35-year-old demographic.

This is an opportunity to focus on:
? What are the gifts young adults bring to the church?
? What are the issues young adults are facing that you would like to see addressed through the church?
? What actions and strategies will build on young adult passions and gifts and address their issues?
? As young adults, what are we willing to do to achieve a vision that responds to the needs of young adults?

Adam Briddell, Lauren McCrae and other young adult leaders from throughout the conference invite everyone with an interest in more effectively targeting the church?s mission and ministry to the needs of young adults to join them on Nov. 3.
