Why boxing?
Reading 'Church enters boxing ring' in the March 1 UMConnection, about the youth program at Casa del Pueblo UMC in Washington, D.C., I admired their efforts to reach out in caring ways to at-risk youth.
However, to focus on boxing, the object of which is to inflict pain and brain damage to the point of unconsciousness (knockout), is highly regrettable.
Instruction in karate, tae kwan do, as well as basketball, could also release anger and impulsive aggression, and teach good sportsmanship without inflicting pain on others, and could include young women as well.
