What we believe

Posted by Bwcarchives on

In his last editorial for this paper, the Rev. Erik Alsgaard wrote an essay based on a feature on public radio titled 'This I Believe.'

As Erik leaves to begin his new role as director of communications for the Florida Annual Conference, we, his co-workers, have a few beliefs we would like to proclaim.

Although it took us too long to learn to properly pronounce, we believe 'Xapis,' or 'grace' is a good way to sign your e-mail. It is also a concept our world needs more of and we?re glad Erik is its purveyor.

We believe, as Erik consistently demonstrated, that one should never take socks too seriously. Ties are also not a matter for sobriety. In fact, socks and ties are just two of the hundreds of daily details that can serve to bring smiles to those we encounter. Unexpected moments of joy are a gift that should not be taken lightly.

We believe that respect is a thing best earned. Erik earned ours. We believe talent, sound leadership and having the courage of one?s convictions are cause for respect.

We believe that kindness matters, that words are important and that all people are created in the image of God and should be treated accordingly. These are insights lived out in Erik?s office and home.

We believe that good stories that are well-told have the power to transform lives. Anyone who?s read Erik?s work knows this to be true.

We believe in fairness and justice. They are concepts that we should never shy away from. Erik has stood up and fought for these principles. Each of us should too.

We believe in diversity, individuality, and allowing people to shine their own bright light. Erik marvels in each of our special gifts, unites us with our commonalities, and then lets us loose to soar to higher mountains where God calls us. He knows we?ll always come home.

We believe that being an ordained minister and exhibiting effectiveness and professionalism are not opposites. In Erik we have experienced all of these attributes.

We believe; and we pray, that God will continue to bless Erik and his wife Sheila George as they turn this corner in the Discipleship Journey.
