FREDERICK – It took two long days of driving for the Calvary UMC mission team to reach Christ Covenant UMC in Belmont, Texas, to help rebuild homes devastated by flooding last year.

The 11 volunteers worked in three teams throughout the week, dry-walling and laying carpet inside, and installing six new windows outside in the brutal heat.

“Word got out from the families we were helping about our church van air conditioning, which was not working very well,” said Ray McKinnon, chairman of the missions group.

Then the day before leaving, three young men worked on the van for a couple hours. They twice refused to accept any payment. “You all came all the way down here to work on my grandmother’s home, it’s the least we can do for you to show you our thanks,” one of the young men said.

“Host families thanked us more times than we can remember,” McKinnon said. “Strangers came out of the blue to offer sincere thanks to all of us for helping to rebuild their community.”
