United Methodist Men are calling for volunteers to help them clean up the historic Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Baltimore May 17.

Mt. Auburn Cemetery, an historic African-American burial ground in Baltimore, is the final resting place of 48,000 famous and ordinary people. It is also the newest mission project of the United Methodist Men of the Baltimore-Washington Conference.

The Rev. C. Anthony Hunt, a district superintendent and director of the conference's Baltimore Initiative, and Sherman Harris, president of the United Methodist Men, are calling all men to an initial clean up effort May 17, from 9 a.m. until noon.

The cemetery, owned by Sharp Street UMC and situated next to Mt.Winans UMC on Hollins Ferry Road, needs significant repair and upkeep.

Larry McCrae, a leader in the Baltimore-Harford District, is hopeful this mission project will unite men of all ages around a common effort and witness. "God's spirit will be on most everything we do for the Kingdom of God. God will bless this effort," he said.

The cemetery was founded in 1872 and holds the remains of African-American bishops, the founder of an Afro-American newspaper, the first African-American woman doctor in Maryland, and the first African-American lightweight boxing champion.

Any man wishing to help clean up the cemetery, is encouraged to bring lawn equipment and trash bags.

The clean-up is one of the first endeavors of Project Hope, a 10-point plan for the city of Baltimore.
