UM voices regarding the Newtown shooting (2)
By Dred Scott
Slaughter of the innocents...Slaughter of innocence
The violence that permeates our culture has once again reared its ugly head ... this time in the decimation of the innocents and at the slowly deepening death of innocence.
No longer will the community of Newtown be afforded the opportunity to hear the sound of the 20 children's voices as they proceeded through childhood. No longer will the appeal of awe in children's spirits permeate the spirit of the community. Death has dealt a harsh blow by the hand of one who was once an innocent himself.
The question need not be how could he … instead it needs to be how could we …continue to embrace …by our silence …the violence that has been a signature of our culture.
If ever we need to call on the name of the Lord, if ever we need Jesus, surely we need him now. Let us embrace the prophet in 2 Chronicles 7:14."If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." Let's do it. Keep the faith!
