Bishop Asbury's letters, May 22, 1805

  • To Daniel Hitt, Presiding Elder in Baltimore: He noted defection of Frederick pastor to Episcopal Church and possible relocation of George Roberts, pastor in Baltimore.

100 Years Ago

Methodist Protestant, Dec. 7 and 28, 1904

  • Union with United Brethren and Congregational Churches was approved by 28 annual conferences, but Maryland voted a substitute.
  • President Tagg of the Methodist Protestant General Conference appealed for full reports from all Methodist Protestant conferences.
  • Methodist Episcopal Bishop Luther Wilson was commencement speaker at Western Maryland College. Diplomas were awarded by Gov. Warfield.

Christian Advocate, May 18 and 25, 1905

  • Congress Heights Church was opened by Bishop Cranston, but dedication was postponed since not all the needed funds were raised.
  • The chapel of Forest Park (St. Marks) Methodist Episcopal was dedicated May 14. The cost with a parsonage was $21,000.
  • Woman's College opened Phi Beta Kappa chapter with 31 alumni and eight seniors as members.
  • Wesley Chapel in Baltimore has Boys Brigade, a reading room and girls'
    classes, under direction of Deaconess Middleton.

25 Years Ago

Circuit Rider, June 6 and 13, 1980

  • Plans for Baltimore Annual Conference were to meet at American University, begin with outdoor campmeeting and include ordination of 36 candidates at the National Cathedral.
  • Conference missionaries, Charles and Ellen Miller were scheduled to return to war-torn Zimbabwe to reorganize dispersed congregations.
  • The Laity Retreat at Hood College attracted a record attendance of 681.
