Twenty years and going strong

Posted by Bwcarchives on

BETHESDA - Methodists United for Peace with Justice, a national association of laity and clergy, is observing its 20th anniversary. It was started by conference laity, Ed and Adrien Helm of Foundry UMC, Sherman Harris of Asbury UMC, and Howard Hallman, now of Bethesda UMC.

The founders were responding to a call from the United Methodist Council of Bishops in their pastoral letter to the church, titled 'In Defense of Creation,' said Hallman, president of the organization. The current denominational resolution on 'Saying No to Nuclear Deterrence,' found in the Book of Resolutions, sprang from the group?s efforts at General Conference in 1988, he said.

Today, MUPWJ?s mission includes education, public policy advocacy and collaboration with members of the Methodist denominations.
