Tiny church draws crowd for anniversary

Posted by Bwcarchives on

NEW WINDSOR - Pipe Creek 'Brick' UMC celebrated its 176th anniversary with a homecoming service Oct. 29. Brick is a small church 'nestled in Baugher?s Orchard (apples and cherries), on the four-church Pipe Creek Larger Parish Charge. It is called 'Brick' to distinguish it from another 'Pipe Creek' earlier in its history, said Pastor Holly Slaugh, who serves the parish with her husband, the Rev. Charles Slaugh.

In its history, Brick had an important role in the establishment of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel) and Westminster Theological Seminary, the forerunner of Wesley Theological Seminary. Both the college president and the chairman of the trustees were members of the church.

The Rev. William Warehime of Bethel UMC in Chewsville, preached and the Uniontown Choir performed for about 45 guests, six times as many as a regular worship service. The Rev. Orlando 'Bud' Kibbe, retired, and former pastor, sang several songs during the occasion.
