Theological education in a new world order

At the Servant Leaders Symposium, Shaun Casey, professor of ethics at Wesley Theological Seminary, suggested several arguments for theological education in a new world order:

Recovery of public service should be part of Christian vocation. We need to train clergy to minister to the public servants in the pews, and a seminary ought to provide a safe space for a discussion of faith, he said.

Clergy and teachers need to be trained for the role of leading the church in the wider world, he added. They should expand inter-civilization learning experiences, realizing that theology is no longer only for white males.

Jesus calls us to love our neighbor, Casey said, and our neighbors are changing.

Pressing contemporary issues in theological education include:

  • War: We should have the moral public debate before the war.
  • Interfaith dialog, especially between Christianity and Islam, needs to be expanded at all levels.
  • We must come to grips with religious pluralism.
  • Eradicating global poverty must be both a political and religious issue.
