ONE YEAR AGO (February 2009).

I was admitted to the hospital a year ago this week. I was taken to Howard County General Hospital. I was immediately airlifted to the University of MD Shock Trauma Unit were brain surgery was performed. I was in a coma during my time at Shock Trauma.

Looking back on it now, I thought my life had come to an end. I woke up two weeks later in Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital later with my family sitting around my bedside. By the time I gained consciousness seventeen days later at Kernan Hospital (I don't remember anything that happened at the University of Maryland, Shock Trauma Center for the past two weeks). Rev. David Argo was with my family most of the time at the Shock Trauma Unit.

When I woke up, I asked a barrage of questions such as, why was everyone crying? Where am I? My eldest daughter, Emminette, spoke up and said, "Dad, you have had another stroke and you are recovering at the hospital." I had a stroke on Feb 4th 2009, and she told me this on the afternoon of the 17th. I could not recall anything of the last 17 days and I started crying and she said "it is now time to give God thanks" and so we prayed.

During the next several weeks, several members from my church (Colesville UMC), Locust UMC, members of the clergy, lay members, relatives and friends visited me. I was transferred to Manor Care Rehabilitation for another four weeks. I then went to Holy Cross Hospital for minor surgery.

Through it all, I kept repeating the following Scripture:

"When he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold". (Job 23:10).

I thank God for Rev. Guy Johnson, who stepped in my shoes at Colesville UMC. He did a marvelous job. I also want to thank Rev. Evan Young, Rev. David Argo and Rev. Callie Matthews for their support. I have known Rev. Callie Matthews since we served congregations in Howard County.

Again let me say how grateful I am to Bishop John Schol and many others for their prayers. In addition, let me also express my gratitude to my wife, Sylvia, children, my relatives, and the many friends who supported and prayed for me through this time.

May God bless you.
