Teens bike to end hunger

BOWIE - Eric Soderholm, 18, chairman of Bowie UMC?s outreach committee, and two friends returned June 14 from a 421-mile bike trip across Maryland to raise awareness of hunger around the world.

Soderholm and his friends Jesse Duff-Woodruff, 17, and Colin McGlynn, 19, a counselor at West River, decided before heading off to college they wanted to 'discover anew the culture and beauty of a state seen all too often flashing by through car windows,' reported the Bowie Blade-News.

They started the trip June 2 in Maryland?s western most city, Friendsville, and over the next 10 days passed through Cumberland, Harpers Ferry, Georgetown and Solomons Island, ending in Ocean City. They spent most nights sleeping in United Methodist churches.

Before the trip began the young men decided to use it to gain attention for a cause. They decided on Heifer International (www.heifer.org) because they believed in the organization?s effectiveness in helping hungry people worldwide, and set a goal of $10,000. By publication time, they had raised over $13,000 and expect to get $15,000 before they?re done.
