Proposed legislation to exempt a Frederick County United Methodist Church from the denomination’s Trust Clause and allow them to keep their property if they withdraw from the
denomination was defeated by the Maryland House of Delegates Economic Matters Committee April 12.
The legislation, which was prompted by Sunnyside UMC, passed in the state Senate. It would have repealed a state law that states church property reverts back to the denomination if a congregation leaves The United Methodist Church.
Conference leaders have expressed a continuing desire to reconcile with Sunnyside members.
