State gives church elevator grant

ROCKVILLE ? Jerusalem-Mt. Pleasant UMC will begin construction on an elevator for the historic church, accessible by climbing 13 steps to the sanctuary. It?s taken two years to get to this point, said the Rev. Jane Wood.

The church has received a grant for more than $79,000 from Gov. Robert Ehrlich for the elevator and new bathrooms.

More than 50 local organizations will share in grants from the state?s Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program. They total more than $20,388,000, representing 'progress and success for preserving some of Maryland?s treasured historic structures,' Gov. Ehrlich said in a press statement.

Wood?s original request for a grant of $60,000 for the renovation was denied. After she met with the Historical Trust Fund?s administrator, she applied again. Not only was the request granted, it included more than asked for. 'The Lord is being more than faithful,' she said.
