Sports camps to fill the summer

MITCHELLVILLE Mt. Oak UMC will host a number of sports camps this summer for neighborhood children who will come to the church to play basketball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, street hockey, wrestle and dance. Even 2-to-6 year olds can get in the game at ABC camp, the church reported.

Volunteers, both adults and teen-agers, are running the camps two or three hours, five days a week. The camps began June 24 and run through Aug. 2, except for the week of July 4, according to Jim Tallon, a member of the church and the basketball instructor.

Church couple receives award for service

FREDERICK A couple from Asbury UMC have received the Reinberger Award that recognizes outstanding dedication to Frederick County families through professional or voluntary service.

On May 31, William and Cynthia Lee were honored at the 20th anniversary dinner of Families Plus, an organization that provides divorce support groups, teen anger management classes and free programs to support individuals and families facing challenges and change.

Both of the Lees have been part of the Frederick County Public Schools system, he as a teacher and administrator, she in food services. William Lee was recently inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, in part for his 47 years of civic involvement. Cynthia Lee has long been involved with the Girl Scouts at Asbury UMC and works with the Frederick County Department of Aging, Heartly House and the county recreation department.

Church parking lot murderers sentenced

FORT WASHINGTON The trials are over for the five men indicted in the slaying of Michael Patten, 29, and Lea Anne Brown, 24. The pair was killed in the parking lot of Fort Washington UMC June 10 last year.

The last of the five, Cortez N. Carroll, 23, pled guilty to the shootings May 1 and was sentenced in June to two consecutive terms of life in prison plus 70 years.

Three other Fort Washington men have been found guilty of the killings and one was acquitted. Eric Thomas, 22, was convicted of first-degree felony murder and will be sentenced July 1. Robert A. Odum Jr., 23, was acquitted of murder but convicted on two counts of kidnapping, according to the Washington Post. He received maximum sentences of 30 years on each of the kidnapping counts. Aaron Hollingsworth pled guilty to two murders in January, but in exchange for testifying against the others he will receive a life sentence with all but 30 years suspended. Marco Scutchings-Butler, 18, a special education student, was acquitted of all charges. He is being held without bond pending charges for other crimes.

Patten and Browns mother, Cari Freemore, who lives in Texas, have been in the courtroom for each trial. Patten said that each trial, with descriptions of the killings in graphic detail, bring back the pain, as fresh as if it happened yesterday.

Theres no closure, she said.
