NEWS | Speaking against slots The Rev. David W. Simpson, administrative aide to Bishop Felton Edwin May, denounces legislative proposals to legalize slot machine gambling in Maryland during a press conference in Annapolis Feb. 4. Nearly 50 legislators, clergy and community advocates, including several United Methodists, gathered to call on Gov. Robert Ehrlich and other leaders to find alternatives to slots for closing the states budget deficit and funding education improvements. Speaking on behalf of Bishop May, Simpson said, State dependence on gaming revenue is bad economics, bad public policy, does not improve the quality of life and does not challenge the citizenry to noble, moral lifestyles.
