Song benefits UMCOR

Many people were stunned into an emotional paralysis following the horrific events of Sept. 11. But one area songwriter gave life to his feelings in an anthem entitled, God Bless Our Country.

Singer and songwriter Jeff Jeffery said he penned the song almost immediately. From watching the news on the 11th, it was something I came up with the next morning. He calls it an inspirational anthem.

One hundred percent of the profits from the sale of the compact disc will be donated to the United Methodist Committee on Relief to aid victims of terrorism, in the United States and Afghanistan.

Im familiar with the United Methodist Church and I trust their charity, as opposed to some others, said Jeffery, who hopes to raise no less than $50,000 through this effort.

The song was performed during the A Time to Heal weekend at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C., last fall, which was sponsored by the Baltimore-Washington Conference and UMCOR.

There was a lot of love there, Jeffery said. I didnt know it was going to be as uplifting as it was for me.

Jeffery grew up in Chicago and has been singing since the age of four and writing music since the age of 10. Although he has no formal music training, he has penned more than 200 songs during his career and signed with Cat Cave Music last March.

Jeffery said he usually sings urban ballads, categorized as rhythm and blues, and love songs. Of the God Bless Our Country project, Jeffery said, I went off into a whole new genre of music, I usually dont do inspirational songs. However, he is eager for people to find encouragement in God Bless Our Country and to realize where their hope lies.
