Society gives God's Word to thousands
BALTIMORE - When 5,500 young people and their counselors gathered at Ocean City for ROCK 2008 in January, they each received an Extreme Faith Bible, a gift from the Maryland Bible Society in partnership with the American Bible Society and the Baltimore-Washington Conference.
"We look forward to helping the entire youth ministry of the conference with Scripture needs," said the Rev. Ray Moreland, Maryland Bible Society executive director.
With more than 20 English translations, many Spanish translations and more than 68 foreign languages, the society provides God's Word all over the world.
The Rev. Peggy Johnson recently carried Spanish Bibles on a deaf mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Spanish Bibles have also been given to the new Spanish Initiative on the Frederick District, and are part of English as a Second Language classes at Trinity UMC in Martinsburg, W. Va.
The Maryland Bible Society has also provided more than $40,000 worth of Bibles for men and women in the armed services since 2003 through Forts Meade, Eustis, Dix and Woods and the Pentagon.
"No matter what translation people enjoy reading, it is our belief that the Scriptures are instruments of God's life-changing power," Moreland said.
