SMILE receives Bishop's award

Posted by Bwcarchives on

LUSBY -For the second time, SMILE was chosen to receive the Bishop?s Award on Ecumenism, sponsored by the conference Board of Ecumenical and Interreligious Life (BEIL). The Rev. Dell Hinton, who chairs BEIL, presented the $1,000 award to the Lusby-based ecumenical organization, Service Makes Individual Lives Exciting.

SMILE provides food, clothing and other forms of assistance and support to those in need. The volunteer organization also holds several ecumenical worship services for the community each year. During Thanksgiving and Christmas volunteers see that people in shelters, alone, elderly or otherwise, have a traditional meal in an attractive setting.

The proceeds from a volunteer-run Thrift Shop, open four days a week, provide some of SMILE?s operating budget, as do individual and church contributions.

Participating United Methodist churches include Eastern, Olivet, St. Paul, St. John in Lusby, and Solomons UMC in Solomons.
