Shelter opens year-around

Posted by Bwcarchives on

HEBBVILLE ? The Night of Peace Family Shelter opened its doors full-time, year-around July 17. Located in Salem UMC, it is the only shelter in Baltimore County located in the heart of a religious congregation, said the Rev. Colin Phillips.

The shelter is a partnership with Salem and Epworth Chapel UMCs, and will soon add Milford Mill UMC as another partner.

The Baltimore County Office of Community Conservation provides a majority of current funding, which enables the church to employ two overnight managers. Around 20 people, including families with children, can be housed and provided with case management and three meals a day.

Volunteers do much of the day-by-day (or night-by-night) work to keep the shelter going ? prepare and serve meals, do laundry, play with children, supervise shower schedule and provide emotional support.

Phillips, who founded the shelter in 2005 with the Disciple Bible Study Class, welcomes other participants in the ministry. Members of the board of directors are available to visit churches to speak about the ministry. Donations are tax-deductible. For information, contact Phillips at (443) 834-5540 or at
