Seniors choir formed for friendship

Posted by Bwcarchives on

WESTMINSTER ? When 10 senior citizens at Westminster UMC got together just to sing they didn?t realize how popular their idea would be. The group formed a singing club and found a director in Dick Blanchard, a retired tenor soloist who spent 30 years as a church choir director. Then Barbara Goff, choir director at the Church of the Brethren, joined up to accompany. There is no paid staff.

Today, the 50-member choir comes to Westminster UMC Wednesday mornings from many churches all over Carroll County and elsewhere. The singers range in age from 50 to 80. They sing church anthems, gospel and spirituals, classical music and Broadway tunes.

The group sings in church services and at retirement communities.

Blanchard was reluctant at first to get involved, but after one rehearsal, he was convinced. 'I sensed a tremendous amount of love and care in the group,' he said.
