Scouts' projects enhance Manidokan

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. VA. ? Two Boy Scouts from New Street UMC?s Troop 33, which has been a ministry of the church for 38 years, earned their Eagle Scout rank by completing projects that improved facilities at Camp Manidokan.

Andy Hammond, 18, planned, designed, found funding and built a .52-mile section of the White Oak Trail along an uphill route with 120 feet of elevation change. The project entailed planning and constructing (with help) a new bridge capable of accommodating an ATV utility vehicle.

Kaz White, grandson of Tom White, the lay leader at New Street UMC, planned, designed, acquired the funding and built the new White Oak Campsite, a 14-by-14 foot gable roofed pavilion and a picnic table, a fire circle with four benches, and a cleared area for 12-14 tent campers.

The boys? projects, said the Rev. Bill Herche, director of Camp Manidokan, enable campers to 'explore what separation from modern conveniences and dependence on God and his creation can mean.'
