Scent-free wellness sought At the annual conference session, I was deeply disappointed that some attendees felt that their need to wear cologne exceeded the right of the conference staff to work in a healthy, fragrance-free environment. Even though it had been made abundantly clear in pre-conference materials that a fragrance-free environment was necessary for the well-being of the toxically poisoned conference staff, some ignored the request. Several staff members suffered the consequences by having asthma attacks, flu-like symptoms and migraines one to the point of vomiting due to the cologne and perfume on the men and women attending. Some staff are so compromised that the fragrance lingering on peoples clothes can sicken them. Conference staff are not the only ones who are affected by fragrance. Undoubtedly, there are many in your local church who are actually sickened by the smell. I know of people who have had to drop out of their church choirs because some members would not refrain from perfume. Please remember this before you spray, dust or douse. Lets work together toward wellness. Becki Price Oakdale Emory UMC, Olney Evangelicals need to bring good news Evangel, from the Greek euangelion, means good news. Given this definition, why is it that most so-called evangelicals are bearers of bad news? These evangelicals deliver bad news for church people who seek an authentic faith based on modern interpretations of Scripture and doctrine, not one bound by the confines of biblical literalism and strict adherence to ancient creeds. They carry bad news for church people who are marginalized because of their God-given sexual orientation and bad news for church people who seek a clearer understanding of and appreciation for other religions, not the conversion of their adherents. It is high time that the churchs so-called liberals appropriate the term evangelical for their own professions of faith. Let us be bearers of good news to a church whose members continue to drift away because they can no longer remain part of an institution that makes them feel like it is a sin to think. The Rev.
