The Rev. Wayne DeHart, left, superintendent of the Frederick District, receives a Patriot Award from the Rev. Elsie McKenney at her retirement from the Navy Chaplain Corps.

UNIONVILLE ? When the Rev. Elsie May McKenney came to Linganore Dec. 19, she was dressed in her Navy uniform, prepared to retire after serving as Commander in the Chaplain Corps of the U.S. Naval Reserve since 1982.

McKenney invited members from her previous congregations, New Market and Mt. Carmel and Bunker Hill UMCs. In appreciation for their support, she presented them and her district superintendent, the Rev. Wayne DeHart, with the Patriot Award from the Department of Defense Employers in Support of the Guard and Reserve.

McKenney, a single parent, also thanked many members who helped to raise her daughter Emily while she was on duty, 'which has enabled me to complete this journey of faith,' she said.
