COLUMBIA - The Rev. Bob Paulen, retired, was a big winner at the World Masters Championships, sponsored by the U.S. Olympic Association, held in Riccione, Italy, Sept. 3-15. Paulen participated in the 70-74 age group.

In the international event, he was one of the 4x400 relay team which won the gold medal and set a new USA record. He won the silver medal in the 300 meter low hurdles and the bronze medal in the 80-meter high hurdles. His fourth event was the long jump and he placed seventh.

'Body, mind and spirit are God given gifts that form the components of a full life,' he said. 'It is important to me to respect and nurture each discipline.'

In a national event this year, he participated for the first time on the indoor circuit and won the pentathlon (hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put and 1,000 meters), 'my best event because I am good in several things but not great in any one event,' he said.
