Religions and politics come together
SILVER SPRING - The Community Builders of Colesville UMC held a forum with Jews, Muslims, Christians and others at the church March 26. It was billed as 'a gathering of religious and civic leaders to create a new community builders? vision.'
Whether it achieved the goal or not remains to be seen, but it certainly took a step or two in that direction, said the church?s pastor, the Rev. Victor Sawyer.
The lead topic of discussion for both religious and political speakers was identifying issues and problems in the community.
Almost every speaker referred to the 'power that exists in a community,' said Carolyn Christensen, Colesville?s communicator. They referred to drugs, gangs, destruction of churches, natural disasters, the mentally ill, racism and other problems that needed cooperative community action.
The uniting response, regardless of religious or political differences, was: We can do it better if we do it together, Sawyer said.
