Prayers sewed into quilts

Posted by Bwcarchives on

MARTINSBURG, W. VA. -  Prayers and Squares, a small group of women at Butler's Chapel UMC, meet twice a month to plan, cut and assemble lap-size quilts as part of an outreach ministry.

It isn't just the making of quilts to give to those in need, the ministry is much more.

'Unlike other charitable quilt programs, the Prayers and Squares program was created to promote prayer,' said the Rev. Joanna Marceron. The quilts are given away to those who in need of prayer.

After the quilts are made, the whole congregation comes together to finish them by tying more than 100 knots, each tied while saying a silent prayer for the recipient. 'The floss is left extra long so that even the biggest hands have no difficulty tying the quilts,' Marceron said.

Information about the prayer-quilt program may be found at www.payerquilt.org; and pictures of many of the Butler's Chapel quilts may be seen at their Web site, www.gbgm-umc.org/butlerschapel.
