INDIAN HEAD - The Charles County government building auditorium was filled with hundreds of officials and well wishers as Edith J. Patterson was sworn in as commissioner. Patterson, a member of Metropolitan UMC, is the first African-American woman to become a commissioner in the southern Maryland county.

'I felt so incredibly honored to be awarded the chance to serve as the first African-American commissioner in Charles County,' she told the Maryland Independent, 'but more importantly as a commissioner for all the people.'

A letter from U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski was read that said in part, 'Not only have you broken the glass ceiling, you have raised it a foot or two. ? [You are] a source of hope and inspiration to the young women who will one day follow in your footsteps.'
