MARTINSBURG – The Rev. Warren Watts opened the Senate's session with prayer March 6, an honor, he said, that was 15 months in the making. He was introduced by Chaplain Barry Black.

For 35 years Watts has been opening and closing Senator Robert Byrd's various meetings, conferences and occasions in West Virginia with prayer, "perhaps two dozen times a year," he said.

One day the senator said, "You've prayed so well for me all these years, I think it's time to share with my colleagues."

Ten days later, in late 2006, Watts received a notice from the Senate Chaplain's office with a scheduled date, but due to everyone wanting their pastors to pray, the earliest date available was March 6, 2008. Watts had to submit his prayer for approval well in advance.

"My two heroes are Billy Graham and Peter Marshall," Watts said. "It's a great honor to join them in opening the Senate with prayer."
