Partnership with Latvian church formed

Posted by Bwcarchives on

WALDORF ? The congregation of Good Shepherd UMC recently became a 'Partner Congregation,' a program of the General Board of Global Ministries and began to provide support for two United Methodist churches in the Baltic Republic of Latvia.

The Rev. Edgars Sneiders, 36, serves two parishes, one in Tasi and the other in Matras. Sneiders is a key young leader of the Latvian church, and was the first person to declare for ministry among Latvian youth following the Soviet period, said Bill Quick, a liaison between the GBGM and the Latvian church.

'Latvia is the most expensive of the three Baltic nations and were his wife not working, they could not make it,' Quick said.

The congregation at Good Shepherd has made a three-year commitment to provide $350 a month support, which covers the pastor's salary, rent, utilities and church programming.

Malcolm Frazier

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Campus minister at Howard University, the Rev. Malcolm Frazier, recently led a group of young men to 'the experience of West River.' The students from Christian Brothers United participated in the weekend spiritual retreat that focused on Christian brotherhood. The motto was 'Not only am I my brother's keeper, I am my brother,' Frazier said.

The young men engaged in personal sharing, prayer, worship and 'plain old fun.' They especially enjoyed the Corinthian Trail, which they described as 'holy fun.'

'To further add to the experience, a double rainbow appeared Saturday evening during dinner as if God was visibly blessing the experience,' Frazier said.
