Dorothy Mae Chastain, 99, the wife of the late Rev. Louis Chastain, died at Cumberland Arms in Cumberland Sept. 26, 2011. She had lived there since August 1998. Pastor David Hattenfield officiated at a funeral service at the Cornerstone Baptist Church Sept. 29.

She was born Jan. 4, 1912, in Eckhart, the daughter of Mrs. H. P. Northcraft.  At an early age, she moved with her grandparents, William and Anna McDonald, to Berlin, Pa., where she was raised. She later lived with an aunt and uncle in Cresaptown, where she met and married the Rev. Louis Chastain, 19 years her senior.

He served many churches in Maryland, West Virginia and Washington, D.C., changing every couple years, from 1920 until he retired from Dumbarton in 1959. He died at the age of 87 in 1980.

Chastain spent many years as a volunteer, beginning as a Red Cross nurses’ aide during World War II at Memorial and Allegany Hospitals. In later years she volunteered at nursing homes in Cumberland and Allegany County, and primarily at Lions Manor in Cumberland. One great love was having Bible study in her home.

Surviving are her two daughters: Carole Elaine Barnes of Leesburg, Va., and Dr. Dania Chastain Strasburg of Charlottesville, Va.; one son, Dan Chastain of Chicago; a grandson, five great-grandchildren; and a number of step-grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent to daughter, Dania Chastain, 1735 Owensfield Drive, Charlottsville, VA 22901.
