Betsey CampaigneElizabeth "Betsey" Campaigne, 70, the wife of the Rev. Curtis Campaigne, died from cancer Sept. 1, 2011, at the Mandrin House Hospice Center in Anne Arundel County. The Rev. Sheldon Reese officiated at her funeral at Hollywood UMC Sept. 7. Also participating were the Revs. Charles Harrell and David Graves.

She and Curtis Campaigne were married in 1970 at Wesley Seminary. She was an active minister's wife as editor of newsletters, choir member and Sunday school teacher at the four churches her husband served in addition to helping with retreats, suppers and bazaars. He came into the Baltimore Conference in 1969 from Troy Conference and served at Asbury UMC in Washington, D.C., from 1969 to 1974, then for two years at Anacostia. In 1976, he was appointed to St. Paul UMC in Chevy Chase and in 1982 to the Hollywood Charge, from which he retired in 1988.

She attended elementary and junior high school in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1958. She earned a BA degree in psychology at American University in 1962, and a Master's degree in General Administration from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) in 1995.

Immediately following college, Campaigne went to work for various defense contractors for 34 years, retiring on March 1, 2008. For a 10 years while her children were young, she became the Director/Teacher at the St. Paul Nursery School in Chevy Chase, and then Hollywood (Md.) UMC Preschool.

As a young person, Campaigne was a member of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) and rose to the rank of National President her senior year of college. She joined the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1962 and served as National Chairman of Junior Membership for three years, was a Chapter Regent and had maintained her membership in the Constitution Chapter in D.C. She held five Senior National Officer positions.

Campaigne was well known in Calvert County, her residence since 1988, and southern Maryland for her work with social service organizations, where she was a director on the Board of SMILE Ecumenical Ministries, Inc. representing St. Paul UMC in Lusby, and served as its president, vice-president and secretary. She was a Chief Election Judge and a 6-year member on the County Board of Social Services. Campaigne was also Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action Committee, Inc.

In all her work, church, community and family activities, she was well known for her "can do" attitude, her enthusiasm, her team work and a willingness to give the job 100 percent of her time and talent. She will especially be missed for her laughter. She loved to read, travel and organize (Campaigne Clutter Control was her side business).

She is survived by her husband of Lusby; her son, David Campaigne of Baltimore; daughter Christina Watson of Virginia Beach, Va.; and four grandchildren. A sister and brother also survive.
