Obituaries - November 27, 2013 - Paul Cummins

Paul Cummins,77, who served as a local pastor in the 1990s, died of cancer Nov. 27, 2013. He was cremated and a private memorial service was held. The US Naval Academy will arrange a memorial service at the USN Columbarium Military Gardens in 2016.

Cummins was born May 1, 1936, in Fitchburg, Mass., and grew up in Syracuse, N.Y. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958 and the Naval Postgraduate School in 1964. He held a master’s degree in business administration from Syracuse University.

He served in the Navy for 11 years and helped to design the Trident submarine. He was in the Naval Reserves for another 10 years.

After his Navy career, he was vice president of Care First, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland and retired in 1992.

At that time he was licensed in the United Methodist Church as a certified lay speaker and was hired as a local pastor and served for three years at Cedar Grove UMC in Parkton. “He was soooo happy 24/7,” said his partner Tony Gatling.

He was a long-time member of Hereford UMC. He served on many committees and was a key person in the design of the new church, said the Rev. Steve Cochran who had pastored the church for 21 years until 2009.

He was president of the Hereford Community Association, which named him “Person of the Year” in 2008. On receiving the award he remarked that he thought it his “civic duty to make (the community) better if I could.”

Surviving is his partner of 22 years, J. Anthony Gatling.
