Obituaries - November 25, 2013 - Roland Walter Radloff

Roland Walter Radloff, 86, the husband of the Rev. Miriam Hope Jackson, died of renal failure Nov. 25, 2013, at the Friends House in Sandy Spring. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held Jan. 4, 2014, at Rockville United Church.

"Rollie" was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Welcome, Minn., to the late Rev. Henry William Carl Radloff, a United Church of Christ pastor, and Emma Louise Golz Radloff.

He was a veteran of World War IIand a post war graduate of Elmhurst (Ill.) College, where he was active in drama. He received his PhD from the University of MinnesotaGraduate School in Psychology and taught at Yale Universityon the psychology faculty.

Thirty years of faithful and distinguished service in the Federal Government included 11 years as a Research Assistant at the Naval Medical Research Institute and 16 years with the National Science Foundation as a Program Director for Social Psychology and later as Special Assistant to the Assistant Director. He was a Congressional Fellow on the staff of Senator Charles Mathias and Representative Pete McCloskey. He co-authored with Robert Helmreich, “Groups under Stress,” based on research on the Sealab and Tektite Projects

He and the Rev. Miriam Hope Jackson married in 1980. They married while she served the Dickerson Charge from 1979-1985. She then served as Director of Pastoral Counseling at Trinity UMC in Frederick for a number of years. In 1996 she went on location and retired in 2004.

He cherished his Minnesota roots. Radloff loved travel, playing bridge and gardening, especially tomatoes. He was an ardent Nationals baseball fan, as well as a Caps hockey fan, a jazz enthusiast, photographer and avid reader in history and politics.

Radloff volunteered many hours with Montgomery County Recycling in his retirement. He was known as "Captain Trash" to Montgomery County school children.

He was an active member of All Souls' Unitarian Church in Washington, DC. In his last years he returned to his roots (UCC) as a member of the Rockville United Church. He was progressive in his convictions and worked for social justice throughout his life.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Miriam Hope Jackson; his daughters, Leslie Kepley and Judith Radloff; son, Bennett Radloff; his step-sons, Matthew Lyon, Andrew Lyon and Jonathan Lyon; and his step-daughter, Karen Lyon Rogers; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, born shortly before his death. He is also survived by his former wife, Lenore Sawyer.
