Obituaries - November 24, 2013 - Rev. David H. Andrews

The Rev. David H. Andrews, 85, a retired Elder, died Nov. 24. He was the grandfather of the Rev. Sarah Schlieckert, associate pastor of Calvary UMC in Frederick, and Pastor Daniel Andrews, who serves the Cowenton/Chesaco Cooperative Parish. A celebration of life service was held at Mount Bethel UMC in Chewsville Dec. 6 with the Rev. Ronald Kurtz officiating.

David Hafer Andrews was born April 14, 1928, the son of the Rev. Elmer Ross Andrews, a minister in the Evangelical United Brethren Church (EUB), and his wife, Helen (Hafer) Andrews. In 1945 he graduated from Hagerstown High School and in 1951 from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa.

He was ordained into the ministry in the EUB church in 1954, the same year he graduated from Bonebrake United Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. Andrews also earned an advanced degree in theology from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Andrews served congregations in Upper Strasburg, Pa., 1949-51; 1954-58 in Dillsburg, Pa., 1958-61 at Otterbein Memorial (EUB) in Baltimore; 1961-64, Fifth in York, Pa.;1964-70, Memorial UMC in Silver Spring. In 1970, following the 1968 merger of the EUB and Methodist churches, he was appointed as district superintendent to Frederick District. From 1976 to 1982, he served Concord-St. Andrews in Bethesda. Then for four years, 1982-86, he was Conference Council Director. In 1986 he became Coordinator of the Appalachian Development Corporation and remained there until his retirement at the end of 1991.

After his retirement, he continued to be active as a volunteer chaplain at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Andrews was a talented humorist, meticulous organizer, amateur woodworker and gardener. He was a student of Civil War history and a fan of trains and airplanes.

He was predeceased by a son, the Rev. Richard “Rick” Andrews in July 2013.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Grace Marie (Willard) Andrews of Sabillasville; three daughters: Barbara Fogg and Rebecca Herman of Maryland, Deborah Andrews of Colorado, and Robert Andrews of Oregon; and 12 grandchildren, including the Rev. Sara Schliekert and the Rev. Daniel Andrews; and two great-granddaughters. Other survivors include the spouses of his children, a sister and numerous nieces and nephews.
