Donna SmithThe Rev. Donna Ann Smith, 50, died from an aneurysm Oct. 24 at the Washington Hospital Center. The Rev. Thomas Hagin presided at her funeral at Brightwood Park UMC Nov. 7. Also participating in the service were District Superintendent Ianther Mills, the Revs. Carolyn Hipkins, Mamie A. Williams and Kwame Abayomi.

She was a graduate of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, American University and Wesley Theological Seminary.

Smith's 20-plus years ministerial career encompassed seven churches or charges. It started with her appointment to Grace UMC in Fairmont Heights in 1985. The next year she moved to Chews Memorial and in 1992 pastored the Huntingtown Charge. In 1995 she was appointed to Community UMC in Washington, D.C. She served there four years, then was appointed to Brightwood Park. In 2002, she moved to Christ UMC in Aquasco, then in September 2004, to Elderslie-St. Andrews., where she remained until she went on a leave of absence in 2006. She retired in September 2007.

Smith was an accomplished pianist and after retirement played piano at various churches. She was also a substitute teacher for the Prince George's County and District of Columbia public school systems. She was a founder of Key of Life Inc, a ministry for battered women.

Survivors include her sister M. Vicky Stewart of Burtonsville, a half-sister Patricia Porter of Temple Hills, two nieces and five nephews.
