Darlene Henry, 65, the wife of the Rev. Eddie L. Henry, died April 15 after suffering a massive stroke. The Rev. David Wentz officiated at a memorial service April 25 at Trinity UMC in Annapolis. The Rev. Douglas Hoffman participated in the service.

Darlene Henry served with her husband throughout his career at churches beginning in Martinsburg, W. Va., where they were married in 1963. She was an organist and played for the 13 years they were at Essex UMC (1987-2000), as she did at Christ UMC in Cumberland from 1968 to 1977, and from time to time at Trinity UMC in Annapolis (2000-2007), where he retired. They also served at Havre De Grace UMC from 1977 to 1987.

In each church she was active with the choirs, handbell choirs, women’s circles and special events.

Henry was employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools as an instructional aide in special education. She commuted to Patpsco High School from Essex, Havre de Grace, Annapolis and their home in Delta, Pa. Survivors include her husband, sons Eddie L. Henry Jr. of Panama City, Fla., and Kevin Henry of Conowingo, Md., a daughter, Jodi Pankowski of Triangle, Va., and five grandsons.

Julia Arnold Clews, 98, spouse of the late Rev. Hedley Clews Sr., died in her sleep April 26 at Asbury Village. A memorial service will be held May 28 at Asbury Village.

Julia Arnold met Hedley Chews when he was a pastor in Brentwood in 1930. They married in 1937 and she became a partner in his 46 years in ministry. They served together at appointments in Virginia until 1947 when he came into the Baltimore Conference and was appointed to Trinity Church in Baltimore. In 1954, they moved to Catonsville and eight years later to St. Luke’s, followed by University in College Park and in 1975 to St. Paul’s in Kensington. He died while serving there in 1979.

Clews entered the University of Maryland at age 16 and graduated at 19. She taught English and music in high school for six years, primarily in Laurel. When she married she left teaching but used her talents in teaching and music in the churches they served.

In 1964, the Clewses helped a missionary found a school in South Korea, known as Berea; it continues to exist, partly due to their continuing support.

After her husband’s death, Clews lived in Fredericksburg, Va., for 11 years before moving to Asbury Methodist Village in 1991.

Survivors include her son, Hedley Vickers Clews of Salem, Ore., two granddaughters and one grandson.

Mintie Brown Turner, 68, a local pastor who served Mt. Hope UMC in Sunderland and retired in 2002, died April 26 after a brief illness. She lived in Glen Burnie. The Rev. Mary Conaway officiated at her funeral May 1 at Cecil Memorial UMC in Annapolis, where she was an active member.

Turner received a secretarial degree from Fleet Business School in 1970. She retired in 2002 after 32 years with the Calvert County school system, and after five years as pastor of Mt. Hope UMC in Calvert County. In 1995 she graduated from the Course of Study program at Wesley Theological Seminary, which qualified her to be appointed as a local pastor.

She was preceded in death by former husband, Earl Brown, and a granddaughter.

Turner was mother to seven children who survive, as does her former husband, W. Monroe Turner. Six of her children are from her first marriage. They are four daughters: Dorothy Brown Leonard, Lillian Booth, and Mercedes Brown, all of Annapolis, and Earlene Brown of Churchton; two sons: Phillip Brown of Glen Burnie and James Brown of Annapolis; and from her second marriage, W. Bakari Turner of Linthicum; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Doreen Mae Heistand Miller, 84, wife of the late Rev. Samuel H. Miller, died at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster. She had Alzheimer’s Disease. The Rev. Darryl Zoller assisted Chaplain Jimmie Swartz at her funeral
May 6 in the Krug Chapel.

The Rev. Samuel Miller died in 2001. He had served the Evangelical United Brethren churches of the Millers, Bixlers, Mount Zion Charge from 1963 to 1967, as a Probationary Elder. He, his wife and three young daughters moved into the new parsonage built in 1966. After the merger of the EUB and Methodist churches in 1968, he was ordained in the Central Pennsylvania Conference.

Doreen Miller was a graduate of the York School of Nursing and had a long career as a registered nurse. She worked in a variety of settings including York Hospital, Carroll County Hospital and in private practice.

She was a resident of Carroll Lutheran Village since 1993 and was a member of Bixler’s UMC She is interred in the church’s cemetery. She is survived by daughters Sandy Shaw of Cleveland, Ohio, Patti LaMotte of Westminster, Kathy Plotts of Bethlehem, Pa., six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
