Obituaries - May 15, 2011 - Rev. William D. Sampselle

The Rev. William D. Sampselle, 88, died May 15, 2011, from a heart attack after a protracted illness. A funeral was held May 20 at the Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick.

Sampselle was born March 9, 1923, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late William F. and Gladys S. Sampselle. He was a graduate of McKinley Tech High School in Washington, D.C., the University of Maryland and Duke Divinity School.

Sampselle served many churches in the 40 years of his ministry, starting in 1946 at Indian Head. In 1949, he moved to Mt. Oak for a year, followed by Reisterstown where he served four years. In 1954, he was appointed to Prince Frederick, in 1959 to Ward’s Chapel and in 1962 to Havre de Grace. From 1965 to 1974, he served St. Paul’s UMC in Sykesville. Next, 1974-1980, his appointment was to New Windsor Parish. In 1980, he moved to First UMC in Cumberland, and in 1982, First UMC in Brunswick. In 1984, he went on disability leave and retired in 1986.

He and Joan Sampselle married in 1946 and had five children who survive.

He enjoyed reading and traveling, which included much of the United States. He also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Sampselle, of 65 years; son David Sampselle of Mt. Airy; daughters Joy Murray of Lancaster, Calif., Alane Haynes of San Diego, Calif., Bonnie Meeks of Taneytown; and Melodie Ann Sampselle of Frederick; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
