The Rev. Manuel R. Tay Sr., 76, a retired Elder working at Union UMC in Lothian, died Feb. 9 after a long battle with prostate cancer. A homegoing service was celebrated Feb. 17.

Tay, a Ghanaian by birth, emigrated to the United States in 1965. He was ordained an Elder in the AMEZ Church in 1969. He transferred to the Baltimore-Washington Conference in 1979.

He pastored many United Methodist churches, including Asbury and Mt. Zion in Shepherdstown, W. Va., Caroline Street, Homestead, Congress Heights, Lewin, St. Marks in Baltimore, Christ in Aquasco, Oakland-Union Cooperative Parish, and Union UMC.

Tay was an avid supporter of Boy Scouts, both in Ghana and the United States. In 1982, he received an award for his services.

He and the Rev. Stella Tay, an ordained Deacon, were married in 1983. They had six children.

Survivors include his wife, daughters Courage Tay, Dawn Tay-Simpson and Inez Tay; sons Eugene Tay, Manuel Tay Jr., and Harris Tay. He also leaves a stepson, Dr. Ernest Jermin II, a stepdaughter Ede Jermin, and 12 grandchildren.
