Obituaries - June 30, 2010 - Rev. John Raymond Thomas

John ThomasThe Rev. John Raymond Thomas, 73, a retired Elder, died June 30 from multiple myeloma. He had Parkinson’s disease. A Memorial Service was held at First UMC in Laurel July 7; he was interred in Arlington National Cemetery Aug. 3.

Thomas was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He spent many years prior to the ministry as a social studies school teacher, then as a Christian educator.

He received a Masters degree from Wesley Seminary in Christian education, then served 14 years in that capacity in Hagerstown, and at North Bethesda UMC and Concord-Andrews UMC.

He returned to Wesley in his late 40s and received a Masters of Divinity degree and was ordained an Elder in 1986.

Thomas served the Alpine Charge from 1982-1985, followed by the Union Bridge Charge until 1991. That year he was appointed to the Benevola Charge where he remained until 1995. He then became pastor of Mt. Carmel UMC in Parkton, from which he retired in 2006.

Thomas was an avid Baltimore sports fan. He also enjoyed reading and playing chess.

He was pre-deceased by a grandchild.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Therese Thomas; three step-children: Ronee Lemanski of Lazoola, Ga., William T. Edwards of Gaithersburg, and Jeninne Hale of Thurmont; and seven grandchildren.
