Obituaries - July 29, 2009 - Rev. Richard Carl

The Rev. Richard Carl Johnson, 81, a retired Elder, died June 9 in Martinsburg, W. Va. A memorial service was held June 13 at Independent Bible Church in Martinsburg.

Johnson served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He held a degree in law from George Washington Law School before he entered Westminster Theological Seminary.

Johnson began ministry in 1953 in the Virginia Conference and transferred to the Baltimore Conference in 1956. He served Providence for two years and in 1959 was appointed to Waldorf. From 1963-67, he was at Bethesda in Hyattstown, and from 1968-72, he served Ward’s Chapel. In 1972 he went into “ministry in the secular world,” as a lawyer for the Interstate Commerce Commission, where he served until his retirement in 1989.

He and Harriette Miller Benson were married in 1953 and they had six children.

Survivors include his wife; sons Thomas Johnson of Martinsburg, James Johnson of Dallas, Texas, Daniel Johnson of Mount Joy, Pa., and William Johnson of Windsor, Conn.; daughters, Barbara Macenczak of Burtonsville and Carolyn Oppenheimer of Grove City, Pa.; 27 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
