Leonard Blagmond, 71, the husband of the Rev. Winifred Blagmond, recently retired pastor, died June 8, 2010, after a lengthy illness. A funeral service was held June 13 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Baltimore, where he had been a member for many years. Participating in the service were United Methodist clergy, the Revs. Diane Dixon-Proctor, Hattie Johnson-Holmes, James Shropshire, Maceo Williams and Bruce Haskins.

Blagmond was a product of Baltimore Public Schools and Baltimore City Community College. He received his early Christian education from Unity UMC in Baltimore.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961 and served for six years, most in Germany . After discharge, he was employed by Western Electric Company, working for the company 20 years until it closed. He then became a Pretrial Release Investigator with the Department of Corrections until his retirement in 2007.

While employed at Western Electric, he re-met a childhood friend, Winifred Johnson, and in February 1968, they married. During their engagement he purchased a house, which became their home together for 42 years until his death.

They were active in Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and after her call to ministry in the United Methodist Church, he continued his activities at Mt. Zion, as an usher, trustee, singing with the mass choir and the men’s chorus, and attending Bible study and Sunday School.

At the same time he did what was needed to support her in the churches she pastored -- Strawbridge in New Windsor from 1998-2001, Jerusalem-Mt. Pleasant from 2001 to 2003; and Ames in Bel Air until she retired in January, 2010.

Blagmond’s hobbies included photography and collecting antique model cars. He was a jazz enthusiast and an avid sports fan of basketball, football and baseball.

Survivors include his wife, a brother, nephew and great nieces and nephews.

Condolences may be sent to Rev. Winifred Blagmond, 3711 Marmon Ave., Baltimore, MD 21207.
