Ruth Stetler, 95, the wife of the late Rev. Roy Stetler and mother to the Rev. Richard E. Stetler, pastor of St. Matthew's UMC in Bowie, died suddenly Jan. 31, at Asbury Village. "She had a good lunch and laid down for a nap," her son said. "In 10 minutes she was gone - just the way she wanted it." He officiated at a memorial service March 20 at St. Matthew's.

Ruth Fisher and Roy Stetler met through his father, publisher of the Evangelical Press. They were married in 1940, at the beginning of his ministerial career in the Evangelical United Brethren churches in Pennsylvania. He came to the Baltimore-Washington Conference in 1945 and was appointed to Cheverly EUB, which became Cheverly UMC in 1968 with the merger of the two denominations. He remained there his entire career, retiring in 1980. In 1988, the Stetlers moved to Asbury Village where he died in January, 2007.

Stetler was a registered nurse, and while raising four children, including twin daughters and two sons, she worked at times for the Prince Georges County Hospital. She was a welcoming and gregarious person and loved visiting shut-ins at Asbury, said her grandson Steven Stetler. She hosted a circle while at Cheverly and loved to sew.

Survivors include Ruth Casey of Timonium and Jane Zeisemer of Ann Arbor, Mich., and in addition to Richard Stetler, Roy H. Stetler III of Luray, Va.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent to Rev. Richard Stetler, 12300 Cliffe Place, Bowie, MD 20715.
