Obituaries - January 22, 2011 - Rev. Edward R. Dickel

Edward DickelThe Rev. Edward R. Dickel, 76, a retired Local Pastor, died Jan. 22, 2011, at the Golden Living Center Nursing Home in Carpendale, W. Va., where he had lived for the past five years. The Rev. Gary W. Trail conducted a funeral service Jan. 25, at the Upchurch Funeral Home in Cumberland.

Dickel retired as a bus driver after 20 years with the Mineral County (W. Va.) Board of Education. For 27 years, he was the announcer of the Frankfort High School football games and in 2004, was honored with a football signed by the Frankfort football players. He was also the instructor of the National Marbles Championships for more than 20 years, and led two Mineral County youth to become national champions.

He had served as president of the Mineral County School Service Personnel.

In 1992, he began serving where needed as a Local Pastor. His appointments included Piney Plains UMC in Little Orleans from 1992-1994; the East Cumberland Multi-church Parish from 1994-1996; Zion UMC on the Wesley Charge in Cumberland until 1999, when he went to Calvary UMC on the Ridgeley Charge, W. Va. He retired from there in 2003. He then was ordained into the Missionary Church International in 2004.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Toya L. Spangler Dickel, and an infant son.

He is survived by his wife Constance A. McDonald Powers-Dickel of Ridgeley; daughters Donna R. Whitacre of Short Gap, W. Va., and Lori J. Hennis of San Antonio, Texas; son Douglas R. Dickel of Romney, W.Va.; step-daughter Michelle Wilhelm of Little Orleans; and seven grandchildren.
