Obituaries - January 10, 2010 - Rev. Harry L. Bennett

The Rev. Harry L. Bennett, 84, died Jan. 10, at Sarah Todd Memorial Home in Carlisle, Pa. A memorial service was held at Otterbein UMC in Carlisle Jan. 14.

He was a graduate of Westminster Seminary, now Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

During his 40 years of ministry in the Baltimore-Washington Conference, he served many churches. These included Oella-Bethany and Sparrows Point in Baltimore, 1955-1959; Brightwood from 1959 to1964; Church of the Redeemer in Hillcrest Heights, 1964-1969. From 1969-1972, he was appointed to Glen Mar in Ellicott City, then moved to Baltimore Gatch until 1976. From 1976 to 1981, he served first at Brookeville, then Savage. In 1981 he was appointed to Scaggsville Emmanuel, and in 1984 to the Howard Chapel-Ridgeville UMC in Mt. Airy. He retired from there in 1988. He spent his retirement years in Boiling Springs, Pa.

Bennett married M. Elizabeth "Betty" Van Wagenen in 1949. They had three daughters.

Survivors include his wife, and daughters, Carolynne B. Mathis of Minneapolis, Minn.; Joanne E. Ingerson of Glen Burnie; and Dawn C. Bennett of Auburn, Mass., and three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
