Obituaries - January 10, 2010 - Gertrude M. Sorrell Ackerman

Gertrude M. Sorrell Ackerman, 86, the wife of the late Rev. Gerald Ackerman, died Jan. 10. The Rev. Mary Ellen Huzzard officiated at a funeral service Jan. 16 At Ashton UMC.

She and Gerald Ackerman were married in 1942 and she accompanied him throughout his ministerial career, which began in 1948 at Light Street UMC in Baltimore. They subsequently served at Asbury UMC in Arnold from 1950-1955, at Ashton UMC until 1962, and St. Andrews in Bethesda until 1972. He was then appointed back to Baltimore to Epworth Chapel until 1979. He returned to Annapolis to Calvary UMC, but a year later went on disability leave for kidney failure. He had begun dialysis in 1979 and continued it for 12 years until his death in 1991 at the age of 70.

Gertrude Ackerman honed her nursing skills during these years, especially the last few of her husband's life, when he had heart by-pass surgery and two hip replacements.

Survivors include sons Philip Ackerman of Silver Spring, David G. Ackerman of Long Beach, Calif., and Robert C. Ackerman of Boynton Beach, Fla., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
